Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have hard water?  Evidence of water hardness is found on scale build up in water heaters and/or on plumbing fixtures, by hard-water deposits on dishes and fabrics, and by soap scum in sinks and baths.

What is softened water?  A water softener replaces "hardness" minerals with sodium or potassium.  The amounts of these elements added to the water are relatively insignificant  in comparison to what is ingested from your food and should not pose any health problems/concerns.

Why soften my water?  Soft water reduces the scaling of pipes, faucets, and bath fixtures.  It further reduces the spotting of glasses, dishes, and flatware.  Soft water helps detergent clean your clothes better.  It reduces your laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, hand soap, and shampoo to half of what you would normally use.  It is pleasant to wash with as it leaves less soap scum on you and your tub/shower.  Soft water is known to relieve minor skin iritations.

Will the salt in the water corrode my pipes?  Absolutely not.

What do you think about magnetic water conditioning (frequently referred to as salt-free water softeners)?  According to the Water Quality Association, it requires chemicals like salt or potassium chloride to soften your water.  Softeners use these checimicals to remove the accumulated hardness.  A salt-free water conditioner will not soften your water and therefore,  the user will not see the benefits associated with soft water, i.e., scale reduction, spot-free dishes, glasses, and flatware, brighter clothes, reduction of detergents and soaps, decreased soap scum, relief of minor skin iritations, etc.

What size equipment will I need?  The type of water treatment solution you need will depend on how much water you and your family uses.  One size does not fit all.
